‘Nida grew up in the deep tunnels of Freehold City. She was remarkably beautiful, especially for a Pit-wraith, a species known to mutate almost at the drop of a hat. Unfortunately for her, when she was six, her parents never came home again, swallowed in the searing light sound and fury of a methane explosion. The explosion, which damaged city substructure for hundreds of yards, was later traced back to partisan saboteurs from Grandurseen. Her parents had merely been in the wrong place hunting rats at the wrong time.
‘Nida was thus brought up by caring foster parents when hers failed to return. They were exceedingly poor, though, even by the standards of Lowerpool culture. All would have gone well, except for the fact that royalty (or at least people who think they are) tend to ruin everything. ‘Nida was noticed for her blossoming beauty, and was to be trained to be a court woman to the overlord of the Lowerpools. Her parents were ordered to hand her over at the age of 14, and she went into the employ of Boss Mikik.
Of course, the boss of the Lowerpools had her trained in all the pretty arts of entertainment and being a hostess, and her continuing... development, endeared her to the old dark-dweller. She was informed at her eighteenth birthday that she was to be married to Boss Mikik, as his third wife. Now, Alazunida had seen the various unpleasant things Boss Mikik did to the people who opposed his will; he was a thoroughly unpleasant person to be close to in almost every way. To complicate matters, his first two wives were rather jealous little minxes, and in collusion with each other to keep as much of the Good Life for themselves as they could to boot. If ‘Nida let him marry her, then she would be stuck close to the repulsive bastard, until his wives managed to make her death look like an “accident.” If she refused, her death, assuming she was so lucky to die, would be public and unpleasant.
Faced with the devil at every corner, she went to the only friend she could trust in the court, Esoda, a chambermaid who was generally up for mischief. She could not help, but she arranged for Alazunida to meet an Elven smuggler who made occasional runs to the deeps, running anything that was going. Turned out that Beck, the smuggler, owed Mikik a bad turn for squeezing him as hard as he did. It took him nearly a week to slip her out past the patrols... between carefully orchestrating patrols that he helped Mikik lay on. Of course, the sneaky elf passed her off to the most dubious sneak in the city, one Black Ernie. She works for him now, bussing tables and mopping floors.
